Florida’s Record-Sized Python Captured: Snake Hunters Share their Story

“Records are made to be broken,” someone once said.

This also applies on this planet of Burmese pythons in Florida with the news on Wednesday (July 12) of a record for the longest python ever caught within the Sunshine State this week. A bunch of hunters claimed the record on Monday (July 10) once they captured a python that measures 19 feet. The monster snake was caught in eastern Collier County within the Big Cypress National Preserve, east of the Miccosukee Reservation along US 41.

The previous record for longest python was set in 2022. It measured 18 feet, 10 inches.

For this explainer video, Andrew West, a visible journalist for The News-Press and Naples Each day News, interviewed one among the amateur python hunters, Naples resident Jake Waleri. He also talked to Ian Eaterling, a biologist for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, to get specific details on the record catch and what it means.
