Football coach at Naples prep school resigns following sharing of profane video on social media

A Southwest Florida prep school football coach is under fire following a profane video shared on social media that showed him verbally attacking one in every of his players. Derek Jenks, the founding father of SWFL Prep and Tech in Naples, announced he was suspending himself until further notice because of this of his actions. “I’ll do what I can to hunt mentorship for myself to give you the option to change into a greater coach and mentor to my players and in order that I can be certain this never happens again,” Jenks said in a video shared on the varsity’s Facebook page. Sitting alongside Jenks was Alvin Day, the player who was the victim of the coach’s verbal assault. “I’m glad he’s holding himself to the identical standard that he held us to and I do forgive the actions of Coach Jenks as he has been a great mentor to me,” Day said. “I’m hoping we will move forward.” Warning: here’s the unedited video of Derek Jenks’ tirade. In a comment on the Facebook post, Quonekuia Day, who identifies herself as Alvin Day’s mother, said the family is considering all options “to be sure that Coach Jenks is held accountable for this disgraceful act.”

What’s SWFL Prep and Tech? Incorporated in January 2022 as a Florida not-for-profit corporation, SWFL Preparatory and Technical Institute is a tuition-based school that provides credit recovery and SAT preparatory classes in addition to technical school options for post-high school football players, a lot of whom try to secure opportunities to play in college. The football team is a member of the National Post Grad Athletic Association, which also includes IMG Academy in Bradenton. In line with its website, the overall cost to attend is $8,600, which incorporates housing since some players come from out of the realm. Day, the player Jenks berated within the video, is listed as being from Boston. In July, Jenks said these out-of-area students are housed on the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott in Bonita Springs. The varsity held a groundbreaking this summer at an athletic training facility on Rail Head Boulevard in Naples which also offers memberships to the general public.

How good is the SWFL Prep and Tech football team? In 2022, the SWFL Prep and Tech Seahawks played an abbreviated season on account of Hurricane Ian, which prevented them from completing their home schedule at Paradise Sports Complex in Naples. The team still managed to win the NPGAA South Division championship and ended its season ranked No. 4 within the league. This 12 months, the team opened with a 22-14 win at Mississippi Prep in Biloxi and improved to 2-0 with a house win over Atlanta Omega Prep on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Lely High School. The Seahawks were scheduled to play Saturday at Prestige Academy in Fort Lauderdale. SWFL Prep and Tech was initially exploring playing its 2023 home games at Fort Myers High School before striking a deal to play at Lely. This 12 months’s team includes quite a lot of players from Southwest Florida, including former Dunbar High standouts Kerby Joseph and David Perkins, Andrew Gergley (Evangelical Christian School), and Daryl Hodge Jr. (Lehigh Senior). In all, the team’s roster lists 20 players as hailing from Lee or Collier counties.

Who’s Derek Jenks? Records show the 45-year-old Jenks, a Michigan native, is the owner of Custom Outdoor Creations, a Naples landscape design company. He’s coached football at multiple levels in Southwest Florida and in 2019 was listed because the president of the Bonita Bullsharks Youth Football and Cheer. Documents show the IRS revoked the organization’s tax-exempt status for failure to file a 990-N form for 3 consecutive years. In July, Jenks said this season can be his fifth coaching prep football. Prior to founding SWFL Prep and Tech, Jenks coached at McDougle Technical Institute Prep in Pompano Beach, where he said he got his start in post-grad football. “I’m just glad we’re in a position to help the children,” he said. “I grew up with no mom and pa and if it wasn’t for football, I would not be where I’m today.” As of Saturday, Jenks appeared to have deleted each his X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram accounts.
