Only three families reside in a 40-unit complex – the new normal

Karen-Vanussa Esposito walks up five flights of stairs to her condominium. “Not having the elevator is difficult to get groceries up,” she begins.

As she sits on her terrace, she doesn’t hear the standard sounds of individuals splashing within the pool or talking on the patio. As an alternative, through the day, she hears jack hammers, power tools, and construction employees. Esposito is considered one of three families, on this complex of forty units that returned to the Egret condos on Bonita Beach. Egret is the one condo complex on Little Hickory Island that’s allowing some residents to return. But while she and her husband and two daughters can sleep in their very own beds and revel in their home, it’s like a ghost town round her, and she or he resides within the midst of a construction zone.

“I’m so blessed to truly find a way to remain here on the Egret,” Esposito said. “We’re the one and only constructing that’s habitable. Now we have power and water. We’re really missing our elevator and our pool, but greater than anything, I miss seeing all our friends and neighbors that are not in a position to be here, some as a consequence of their places being destroyed by the hurricane and a few because they’ve trouble walking up the steps.”

Esposito said one family moved back to their unit on the ninth floor.

“The couple is older and limits their time going up and down the steps to 3 times a day,” she described.

Her family has learned to live with the inconveniences.

“When you could have groceries, we have now to hold it up little by little. Everybody has to assist,” she said. “We bought cooler bags and we put every little thing in those, and we each carry considered one of those up the steps.”

Mail can also be a hardship.

“We won’t get mail delivered. It goes to the post office,” Esposito explained. “FedEx sometimes they do not know they will are available the gate so they convey it back to the post office. Other times they leave it someplace downstairs and we have now to search out it.”

She found there are some hardy employees who deliver.

“Goal will deliver,” she said. “They’ll come up, but I even have to tip them very nicely.”

But not every little thing may be delivered.

“You may’t buy furniture because how will they get it up,” Esposito questioned. “No one desires to walk up steps with a washer and dryer. We desired to get a brand new bedroom set for the women, but no person goes to wish to walk up five flights of steps with it.”

After days of carrying her beach chairs up and down the steps, she began leaving them under the constructing.

“After I forget something after I am on the beach or if I even have to go to the toilet, I even have to all the best way back up,” she said.

Work has not even begun on the pool bathrooms on the condo. Due to construction, the Esposito family is just staying within the condo part-time, though they were there for the complete summer.

Her daughter, Alexa Esposito, 16, says life within the condo is not too bad.

“I do miss the elevator, however it’s okay,” she said. “After I had an elevator, I might still walk up sometimes, so it doesn’t trouble me as much. I miss the pool.”

Esposito and the 2 other families living at Egret are attempting to create a small sense of normalcy. With their recreation areas now all a construction zone, they’re creating a bit of paradise under the constructing. They put plastic chairs and a table within the space that was the community room. Additionally they bought a grill.

“For the few which are here, we make the best possible of it,” Esposito described. “Now we have sunset completely satisfied hour under the cement shell of the old community room.”
