The Historic Palm Cottage in Naples: A Home of Cultural Significance Worth Preserving and Exploring

Historic Palm Cottage is Naples oldest house. Inbuilt 1885, it’s the flagship asset of the Naples Historical Society. To learn in regards to the tours which might be available, visit www.napleshistoricalsociety.org. COURTESY NAPLES HISTORICAL SOCIETY

I can still vividly remember the curiosity I felt while first visiting the house of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. And being a fifth-grade student on the time, I attempted to picture what life would have been like for Honest Abe’s children.

Personally touring a historic site could be a magical experience, transporting you back in time, and sparking your imagination by making you wonder in regards to the way things were when the location was inhabited by its original occupants.

While we don’t have many elderly buildings in Naples, we do have a spot we will go to attach with our local history because it was in 1895. It’s Naples’ oldest house, Historic Palm Cottage, and Naples Historical Society is extending a warm invitation so that you can visit.

The cottage is open on repeatedly scheduled days and times, depending on the kind of tour available on the web site, after suffering an excellent deal of injury inflicted by Hurricane Ian.

Naples Historical Society President and CEO Elaine Reed found sea muck from the Gulf embedded in every corner of the cottage during her first visit there the morning after. “We didn’t expect the storm surge to be as damaging because it was, not only to the society’s buildings, but to much of the Naples Historic District as well,” she shared. “My fear of how you can manage our way out of this grew by the minute. Fortunately, the community got here to the rescue, and generous philanthropy made all of the difference in our ability to recuperate swiftly and gracefully.”

So, she and her team, including a legion of volunteers and a bevy of donors, brought Palm Cottage back to life to permit visitors to once more imagine what it was wish to be a guest or resident in Naples within the late 1800s.

While there have been no actual residents in Historic Palm Cottage then, it definitely had many guests when it opened as “The Annex” for Hotel Naples, later often called the Naples Hotel.

“The Annex was where you’d stay when you knew Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Henry Watterson who made it his vacation home,” says Naples Historical Society education manager John Telishak.
