Trump outperforms Biden in Florida, leading among Hispanic and younger voters.

A poll issued Thursday by Florida Atlantic University and Mainstreet Research shows former President Donald Trump with a snug 8-percentage-point lead over President Joe Biden in Florida.

The poll indicates Trump at 51% of likely voters with Biden at just 43%. More concerning for the president, Trump leads in various sectors of the Sunshine State electorate, including amongst Hispanic and younger voters. The 815-person poll has a margin of error of three.3 percentage points.

Trump leads Biden by 2.8 percentage points within the 18-to-34 group, 11.5 percentage points within the 35-to-49 group, and 13.1 percentage points amongst Latinos. Even amongst women, Biden leads Trump by only a fraction of 1 percent, 47.8% to 47.6%.

“Florida is a reasonably solid state for the previous president, and that’s well reflected here,” stated Kevin Wagner, an FAU political scientist and pollster.

“If Biden desires to have a probability at winning this state, he must significantly improve his support amongst younger and Hispanic voters,” Wagner added.

The survey also indicated that Biden is underperforming amongst white voters with college degrees, leading Trump by just 47.9% to 46.1%, while getting significantly fewer votes from white voters without college degrees, trailing 62% to 39.2%.

Moreover, 67% of respondents listed economic and immigration issues as their top priorities, while only 23% mentioned topics resembling abortion, the environment, and foreign policy. This is critical as polling took place on April 15-17, following Trump’s recent statements on reproductive rights.

This month, the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign declared that Florida “is in play.” The poll indicates that the president’s re-election campaign within the state has much work to do.

“It isn’t an insurmountable lead,” Wagner explained. “However it does suggest that Florida starts as a robust state for the previous president.”

One other interesting finding is that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s candidacy appears to have a big impact on determining the state’s victor.
