It’s almost Record Store Day again in Southwest Florida, and vinyl fans will little doubt be lined up first-thing Saturday morning to attain fun, limited-edition records. This 12 months’s vinyl treasures include a blue-colored album from hot folk-pop singer Noah Kahan, demo tapes from “The Rocky Horror Show” and a 12-inch single of Paramore and David Byrne covering one another’s songs. Plus nearly 400 more titles coming to record stores all around the United States. “They arrive out with a number of really cool stuff that you just’re not gonna get anywhere else,” says Ralph Tarantino, owner of Record Trader 1 in Fort Myers. You may have to get there early, though. The perfect stuff goes quickly. “It’s always the busiest day of the 12 months,” says J.W. Honeycutt, owner of Joe’s Record Exchange in Fort Myers. “We had an enormous line (last 12 months). It wrapped all the way in which across the block.” Here’s every part you must know concerning the 2024 Record Store Day:Record Store Day: Celebrating vinyl and the individuals who adore it

The annual event is one in every of the most important, busiest days of the 12 months for a lot of independent U.S. record stores and vinyl lovers. And that’s true for the six Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Port Charlotte stores participating Saturday. In spite of everything, that is the whole idea behind the Seventeenth-annual Record Store Day: To drum up enthusiasm and publicity for the country’s independent record stores.

“Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 … as a technique to have fun and spread the word concerning the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores within the US…” the event’s website says. “This can be a day for the individuals who make up the world of the record store ― the staff, the shoppers and the artists ― to return together and have fun the unique culture of a record store and the special role they play of their communities.” There’s also a spin-off event that happens in November: RSD Black Friday. However the April event is the unique.

When is Record Store Day? Record Store Day often happens on the third Saturday in April. This 12 months, that lands on April 20. A lot of 2024’s releases play with that “4:20” theme, including pot-leaf-shaped picture discs and other marijuana-themed releases (similar to Cheech & Chong’s classic 1978 comedy album, “Up In Smoke”). These limited-edition albums are limited-supply ― sometimes with press runs of 5,000-10,000 or less. So if you happen to’re not there when the stores open, you may not get what you would like.

Vinyl’s ongoing popularity Just a pair many years ago, vinyl appeared to be dying as digital downloads and streaming took over the marketplace. But then records became cool again with teens and twentysomethings, and suddenly vinyl was making a comeback. Interest keeps growing, Honeycutt says. “Every couple weeks, there’s at all times someone in who just got a record player and so they want some records to play on it,” Honeycutt says. “It’s still pretty popular.” Americans spent $1.4 billion on albums in 2023, based on the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). That is a ten percent increase from 2022 and the Seventeenth straight 12 months of growth. That total surpassed CD sales for the second 12 months in a row, however it’s still much lower than streaming. That generated a record-high $14.4 billion in 2023 ― making up 84 percent of all recorded music revenue, based on the RIAA. Collectors give different reasons for his or her love affair with vinyl. The sound is “warmer” and more true to life, they are saying. Additionally they just like the collectability and all of the cool variations, similar to coloured vinyl or picture discs (each of which will probably be in ample supply for Record Store Day). Then there’s the touchable nature of vinyl: You possibly can hold albums, have a look at their over-sized cover art and skim their liner notes. And there’s the physical act of truly putting the album on a turntable. You get none of that with streaming music or MP3s.

What Record Store Day means for Southwest Florida vinyl shops It’s big business, in fact. “It’s definitely going to be a busy day,” says Tarantino of Record Trader 1. “It’s one in every of the busiest of the 12 months.” This will probably be the primary Record Store Day for Stellar Records, which opened in September 2023 across from Edison Mall in Fort Myers. “I’m very excited and kinda nervous,” owner Liz Cochran says. “I’m just able to see what the community has to say about Record Store Day.” Cochran is a fan, herself, and has often ventured out on Record Store Days to see what cool, rare albums she could find. But this 12 months, it’s different: She sees Record Store Day as a technique to reach vinyl fans who don’t learn about her store yet. “The predominant thing for me is I need the notice,” Cochran says. “Yes, we’re here. Yes, we’re open seven days every week and we’ve a web based store.” For Tarantino, Record Store Day is about greater than ringing money registers and swiping bank cards. It’s a few shared love of music and vinyl. “I like when people are available and buy records,” he says. “You see some recent faces, and also you get to talk over with people about cool stuff. … The conversation is pretty amazing.”

Record Store Day exclusives: What are you able to find this 12 months? This 12 months’s Record Store Day exclusives ― nearly 400 releases in all ― include singles, compilations, picture discs and colored-vinyl records by everyone from The Beatles and Pearl Jam to De La Soul and Lil Peep. Southwest Florida stores are still getting in shipments and a few aren’t sure yet what they’re getting or how much of every album.
